Introduction

Acquiring assets (photo, sound, video, graphic, text extracts) from outside copyright holders for reproduction within a title requires careful planning and a knowledge of the law. Delays in acquiring an asset can affect project scheduling, and asset costs themselves are often difficult to anticipate. The general rule of thumb is to anticipate the worst when it comes to scheduling time for the research, copyright clearance and acquisition of assets, to build an adequate safety margin into project costs for these resources, and not to place too high a reliance on acquiring specific assets but to identify suitable alternatives that one might hope will be less problematic to acquire. It is always a good idea, of course, to generate assets in-house over which you hold the copyright and can therefore do with as you please.
