- Project Proposal
Proposal to the Science Museum by ISC, February 1994
Proposal to develop a suite of tools and resources to support, extend and aid in the continual assessment of, young people's educational experiences within the Science Museum.

Interactive Multimedia Design Guidelines: A Contribution to the Discussion, 23.3.1994
This discussion paper was produced as part of the multimedia design guidelines project. Its purpose was to help identify and define the various design processes involved in the development and evaluation of multimedia resources.

Making Multimedia Work for Developers: Authoring Tools in the Assistance of Project Development
The paper shows how authoring tools can contribute at all stages of the development process. It argues that such tools can contribute to the solution of day-to-day problems, speeding development times and cutting costs, making tasks more interesting and less burdensome. This paper is on the WorldWideWeb.

The Collection and Management of Assets in the Production of a Multimedia Program on Yeats
The paper describes a database tool for the management of multimedia assets in a title-production environment. The tool was developed in the context of creating an interactive multimedia program on the life and work of the poet W.B. Yeats. The approaches and lessons described have general application in multimedia title-development environments and will be of interest to any involved in electronic publishing. This paper is on the WorldWideWeb.

Project Report: Guidelines for the Design, Production and Evaluation of Interactive Media
The Multimedia Guidelines project is a collaborative endeavour by academic and industrial partners, iSC (supported by granting from the International Fund for Ireland) and Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC), Galway, to deepen awareness of the multimedia design process. Major topics covered include the planning, designing, producing and evaluating of interactive materials. The results form the basis of a set of design guidelines for multimedia developers, whose aim is to contribute to the development of higher-quality multimedia products for education and training. The guidelines will also be of interest to those commissioning multimedia programs in planning and preparing for discussions with developers. Interactions were studied in a variety of ways: by surveying current best practice in the field of interactive multimedia development and through the systematic development and evaluation of two exemplar learning units: Exemplar 1. Statistics; Exemplar 2. On the Life and Works of W.B. Yeats.
- Paper (projected)
The Use of Virtual Environments and Narrative Structures in the Organisation of Database Materials and as Learning Aids
The problems inherent in exploring large amounts of information, stored in a variety of digital media formats and accessed in screen-sized chunks will be discussed. Lessons will be drawn from an evaluation of the Yeats exemplar and other multimedia programs using spatial virtual environment metaphors to facilitate access and navigation within a data-space.

Project Report: Belfast City Council Waterfront Hall Presentation Software
A report on the production of presentation software for the new Belfast City Council Waterfront Hall's marketing team, January 1996.
SOFTWARE
-
BIDS Articles Interlibrary-loan-forms Template
A Hypercard stack was produced for use with the BIDS software. It allows the results of article searchs (downloaded in database format) to be converted into a form which may be immediately printed on University of Ulster interlibrary/intercampus loan forms.
-
MB033: Interactive Virtual Multimedia Studio Design Model
An early task in the setting up of a multimedia studio is the planning of the working environment and here multimedia visualisation tools prove particularly effective in arriving at optimum ergonomic solutions to fit available space and work patterns. A studio model was constructed using Virtus Walkthrough Pro on the Mac.

Tool for the Inventorizing and Managing of ISC Resources
In a multimedia centre, multimedia tools for the management of resources seem both appropriate and useful. This program tool was developed using Hypercard, to inventorise and manage equipment resources around the work place. The tool allows the user (the network and overall process manager) to get an immediate picture of where things are (or should be) within the centre. Each item of equipment is represented by an icon, which can be dragged around the map. As the item is clicked or dragged, a label appears which details the item down to its serial number. When released, that item becomes attached to a room and a person or place within that room, allowing fresh inventory and allocation lists to be compiled within seconds.

Program to Manage Multimedia Assets Relating to Yeats
A software database tool for the management of multimedia assets is being developed.

Guidelines for the Design, Production and Evaluation of Interactive Media
A WWW hypertext document of design guidelines for multimedia developers, which aims to contribute to the development of higher-quality multimedia products for education and training. The guidelines will also be of interest to those commissioning multimedia programs in planning and preparing for discussions with developers. Points are illustrated by reference to the work done on the production of two exemplar multimedia packages developed by the ISC: Exemplar 1. Statistics; Exemplar 2. On the Life and Works of W.B. Yeats. This interactive WorldWideWeb document is consultable on the Internet at the following address: http://www.iscm.ulst.ac.uk/~adrian.

Visions of Yeats
A virtual model of Yeats's tower was used to create a multimedia environment for learning about the life and works of the poet.
-
Yeats Test-of-Concept Model
A test-of-concept model was developed to explore various ideas about the form and structure of the Yeats exemplar.
-
Statistics Test-of-Concept Model
A test-of-concept model was developed to illustrate the possibilities of one particular menu structure and the possible look and feel of a section to investigate the Central Limit Theorem. As a result, several areas were identified as suitable vehicles for experimental research in the testing of the prototype application. These areas include: the suitability and effectiveness of a section to test before-and-after attitudes to Statistics; the suitability and effectiveness of a section to test basic maths skills; pre- and post-section test facilities; the use of graphic-narrative devices as study aids (to be investigated through the use of versions with and without graphic-narrative agents).
